Changing Spots
John 15:4-5 -- “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide, in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
In 1993 President Bill Clinton asked two dozen teenagers from prominent families to participate in a political unity camp; half were from Israel and half were from Palestine. President Clinton also asked their country's leaders, Arial Sharone and Yasser Arafat to take part in this attempt for unity. Obviously, these two countries had been fighting for decades. Our President thought if he could plant seeds of unity in these influential kids, when they become adults, perhaps they will get along better.
Toward the end of their unity camp, President Clinton wanted to show the world the progress he had made in unifying these kids. Through the years, various countries at certain times have attempted to make Israel and Palestine get along with each other—this was yet another attempt by the United States of America. So Bill Clinton placed these future leaders in a straight line, while the three leaders (Clinton, Sharone and Arafat) walked down the line shaking hands. This exercise was intended to show each country’s thankfulness to the teenagers because the leaders knew many people would not be so willing to take part in a public exercise to overcome personal problems and build unity.
As the three political leaders moved down the line, one Israeli kid was very distracted! Within the last three weeks, his father was assassinated by someone from Palestine—shot in the throat. The teenager assumed the Palestinian leader; Yasser Arafat had arranged the brutal killing of his father. This teenage boy did not want to shake hands with the person responsible for killing his father! The kid had many emotions running through his head. The Israeli teenager only shared a few kosher thoughts with the documentary crew: “Is it right to make myself shake his hand? Am I even able to make myself shake his hand? …after all he had my dad killed.”
I like happy endings. Unfortunately, within a few years most of these teenagers joined their military and spent their time shooting each others countrymen, families… and occasionally each other. We know that a leopard can’t change its spots no matter how hard it licks and scratches. (Jeremiah 13:23) Neither are people very successful at making ourselves clean, kind, forgiving and loving. Fortunately, Jesus knows our limitations. If we are willing to ‘abide in Him’, Jesus will produce whatever fruit He wants, and it will be accomplished through His abilities instead of through our well intended attempts. (John 15:4-5)
